RAM Backorder Recovery · Availability
Dealer Says the Part Is Unavailable — What Are Your Options?
"National backorder. No ETA." On the heavy-duty RAM ABS hydraulic unit, that answer is usually accurate — and it isn't the whole picture.
Here is what the dealer's answer actually covers, and what the record holds beyond it.
Best suited for
- Fleet managers
- Parts counters
- Service advisors
- Independent repair shops
The situation
The truck can't be dispatched with an ABS fault. The hydraulic control unit is ordered, the counter has no date, and there is nothing to schedule against.
Why this happens
Each platform resolves to one current factory number. When that number is unavailable, the whole network is unavailable — there is no second factory option to fall back on within the chain.
The dealer can tell you what the system shows. They can't tell you whether the fault is hydraulic or electronic, or whether a rebuild path applies to your unit.
What do shops usually do first?
- Ask the dealer to search other regions
- Call independent shops for availability
- Search listings for a used unit
- Quote the customer a wait with no end date
The documented options
The Mopar chain for the pickup and 3500 cab chassis
One documented factory supersession: 68143491AA is superseded by 68143491AB. That is the whole chain for this unit.
Applies to 2500 / 3500 pickup and 3500 cab chassis only, confirmed from the VIN.
The separate chain for the 4500 / 5500 chassis cab
The chassis cab has its own single supersession: 68195569AA is superseded by 68195569AB.
Cross-platform substitution between the two chains is a refuted path, not an untested one.
Independent rebuild or exchange
Send-in rebuild and exchange programs return the truck to service while the OEM unit remains on backorder.
A service, not a part — no assembly part number is issued, and terms are the provider's own.
Confirming the fault is the module, not the hydraulic unit
The ABS control module is a separate component with its own chain: 68347098AA → 68347098AB → 68347098AC, with AC as the current issue.
Replacing the module does not resolve a hydraulic fault. Ordering the wrong half costs another backorder cycle.
What has already been ruled out
The pickup and chassis-cab units do not interchange
68143491 and 68195569 are separate chains. A chassis-cab truck fitted with a pickup unit leaves the truck unsafe and out of service.
No new aftermarket hydraulic control unit exists
No new aftermarket equivalent was identified for these platforms. Independent supply is rebuild and exchange only.
The module is not a substitute for the hydraulic unit
A module swap on a hydraulic fault returns the truck unrepaired.
Decision factors
The appropriate option depends on factors including:
- vehicle configuration
- programming requirements
- availability
- downtime tolerance
- warranty requirements
- budget
These factors are evaluated during a SurePart Investigation.

The exact number quoted, against the platform
A pickup number on a chassis cab is the most expensive mistake in this repair.
Hydraulic unit or control module
They are separate components with separate chains.
Scan-tool access
Programming and an ABS bleed follow replacement.
What this record does not cover
Not covered by the record
Programming and an ABS bleed are recorded as a requirement after replacement — without them the truck is not roadworthy even with the correct part fitted. The record does not say which tool, which routine, or how long.
No recall number, eligibility rule, or citation is held in this record, and no diagnostic trouble code appears anywhere in it. Recall coverage is a question for the dealer, not for this page.
Documented Components
What each component is, which factory numbers supersede which, and what the record establishes.
- RAM 2500/3500 ABS unit68143491AA on national backorder: the factory supersession, the platform boundary that costs a cycle, and the rebuild path fleets actually use.
- RAM 4500/5500 ABS unitThe chassis-cab hydraulic control unit runs the 68195569 chain and never crosses with the pickup unit. Here is what that means before you order.
- RAM ABS part numbers68143491, 68195569 and 68347098 split by platform — plus the three Mopar numbers whose application has not been established.
