GM 10L80 / 10L90 Control Valve Body

The truck loses forward gears or drops into a limp condition, the valve body is on order, and the counter has no ETA. Here is what is actually on record for this unit — the factory chain, the repair path, and what has already been ruled out.

What the truck is doing

The recorded failure is valve bore wear in the 10-speed control valve body. The vehicle loses forward gears or defaults to a limp condition, and it stays out of service until the valve body is repaired or replaced.

What the factory part looks like right now

GM redesigned this valve body twice. The chain runs Gen 1 → Gen 2 → Gen 3, and at Gen 3 it splits by calibration: one unit for diesel, a different unit for gasoline.

  • 10L80: 24044193 → 24065353 → 24071206 (diesel) / 24071207 (gas)

The Gen 1 10L80 unit is superseded by the Gen 2 redesigned valve body, which is followed by the calibration-specific Gen 3 units.

Diesel and gasoline Gen 3 units are not substitutes for one another.

  • 10L90: 24047996 → 24065354 → 24071206 (diesel) / 24071207 (gas)

The 10L90 runs its own Gen 1 → Gen 2 chain into the same Gen 3 calibration split.

10L80 and 10L90 Gen 1 units are parallel variants of one design — not substitutes.

What else is on record

  • GM in-place feed-limit repair

A factory field procedure that repairs the valve body on the vehicle instead of replacing it.

Eligible only at or above 7,000 miles and only when there is no excessive clutch debris.

  • Sonnax oversized feed limit valve

Sonnax supplies an oversized valve (105740-54K, -59K, -60K) for the same bore, for bores the drop-in valve can no longer seal.

Requires bore reconditioning — a machining service, not a part.

  • Recall software mitigation

An OEM software mitigation defaults the transmission to 5th gear so the vehicle stays drivable while a permanent repair is scheduled.

It does not repair the hardware.

  • Independent reman or billet exchange

Exchange programs return a shipped unit with no dealer programming required.

Recorded as a service: no discrete assembly part number was established.

Compare repairing the unit against replacing it

What has already been ruled out

  • The Ford 10R80 does not interchange

Shared architecture does not mean shared parts. This is a validated conclusion, not an untested option.

  • There is no GM-authorised remanufactured valve body

Any reman unit for these families is an independent product with independent warranty terms.

  • This is not an Allison, software-only, or 8-speed defect

The 8L90 / 8L45 failure is a different defect and is not part of this family. It is also not diesel-only.

Before ordering or installing, confirm

Confirm before you commit

  • Which transmission the truck actually has

10L80 and 10L90 run separate part chains. Confirm the variant against the VIN.

  • Diesel or gasoline calibration

Gen 3 units are calibration-specific. The wrong calibration is the wrong part.

  • Whether there is clutch debris

If debris is present, the correct action is teardown, not the in-place repair procedure.

  • Bore condition

Below 8 inches Hg at the balance end the bore is worn, and an oversized valve with reconditioning is required.

What this record does not cover

Not covered by the record

Labor and programming requirements are not carried in the current record for this family. Neither is the recall eligibility rule — the software mitigation is recorded as an option, but no eligibility criteria, recall number, or citation is held. Treat both as open questions for the dealer, not as answered here.
