Understanding the 10L80 / 10L90 Valve Body Family

Two parallel transmissions, two supersession chains, one shared third generation that splits by fuel type — and one architecture that looks related but does not interchange.

Getting this map right is what stops a second backorder cycle.

Best suited for

  • Parts counters
  • Independent repair shops
  • Transmission specialists

The situation

A counter is asked for "a 10-speed valve body" and has to resolve that into one specific number.

Why this happens

The 10L80 and 10L90 are parallel variants of one design. They run their own Gen 1 → Gen 2 chains and then converge on the same Gen 3 calibration split.

Because the family name is shared and the units look alike, the difference tends to surface at installation rather than at ordering.

What do shops usually do first?
  • Search by vehicle rather than by transmission variant
  • Assume 10L80 and 10L90 units interchange
  • Assume the Ford 10R80 shares parts

The documented options

  • 10L80: 24044193 → 24065353 → 24071206 (diesel) / 24071207 (gas)

The Gen 1 10L80 unit is superseded by the Gen 2 redesigned valve body, which is followed by the calibration-specific Gen 3 units.

Diesel and gasoline Gen 3 units are not substitutes for one another.

  • 10L90: 24047996 → 24065354 → 24071206 (diesel) / 24071207 (gas)

The 10L90 runs its own Gen 1 → Gen 2 chain into the same Gen 3 calibration split.

10L80 and 10L90 Gen 1 units are parallel variants of one design — not substitutes.

  • Repair hardware, not replacement units

24059372 (feed limit valve), 24279142 (spring), and the spacer plates 24075088 and 24075090 belong to the repair procedure.

These are kit hardware. They are not interchange alternatives for a valve body.

  • Oversized valve kits

Sonnax 105740-54K, -59K, and -60K are oversized feed limit valves for the same bore.

All three require bore reconditioning before fitting.

What has already been ruled out

  • The Ford 10R80 does not interchange

Shared architecture does not mean shared parts. This is a validated conclusion in the record, not an untested option.

  • There is no GM-authorised remanufactured valve body

Any reman unit for these families is an independent product with independent warranty terms.

  • This is not an Allison, software-only, or 8-speed defect

The 8L90 / 8L45 failure is a different defect and is not part of this family. It is also not diesel-only.

Decision factors

The appropriate option depends on factors including:

  • vehicle configuration
  • programming requirements
  • availability
  • downtime tolerance
  • warranty requirements
  • budget

These factors are evaluated during a SurePart Investigation.

Before ordering, confirm

Confirm before you commit

  • 10L80 or 10L90

Separate chains. Confirm the variant against the VIN.

  • Diesel or gasoline

The Gen 3 split is calibration-specific.

What this list does not cover

Not covered by the record

Pricing, availability, and dealer stock are not part of this record. Neither is any programming requirement tied to a specific number.
