Why GM Redesigned the 10L80 Valve Body
Two redesigns and a calibration split are unusual for a single component. The reason sits in one circuit.

The situation
Owners and shops encounter three generations of the same valve body and want to know what actually changed — and whether the change matters for their repair.
Why this happens
The recorded failure mode is valve bore wear in the feed limit circuit. Wear in that bore leads to loss of forward gears or a limp condition.
GM addressed it twice at the part level: Gen 1 gives way to a Gen 2 redesign, and Gen 2 gives way to a Gen 3 that is issued separately for diesel and gasoline calibrations. Alongside the part change, a field service procedure repairs the same circuit in place by replacing the feed limit valve, its spring, and spacer-plate hardware.
Why does the third generation split by fuel type?
The record establishes that the Gen 3 units are calibration-specific — 24071206 for diesel, 24071207 for gasoline — and that they are not substitutes for one another. It does not hold the engineering rationale for the split itself.

Factory replacement through the supersession chain
The current factory issue is the Gen 3 unit, which splits by calibration: 24071206 for diesel, 24071207 for gasoline. The chain runs Gen 1 → Gen 2 → Gen 3 on both the 10L80 and the 10L90.
Applies when the factory unit is obtainable and the vehicle's calibration is confirmed. Diesel and gasoline Gen 3 units are not substitutes for one another.
GM in-place feed limit repair
A factory field procedure repairs the valve body on the vehicle instead of replacing it, replacing the feed limit valve (24059372) with its spring and spacer-plate hardware.
Eligible only at or above 7,000 miles and only when there is no excessive clutch debris. With debris present, the record points to teardown instead.
Oversized feed limit valve with bore reconditioning
Sonnax supplies oversized feed limit valves (105740-54K, -59K, -60K) for the same bore, fitted after the bore is reconditioned.
Applies when the bore itself is worn and a drop-in valve will no longer seal. Reconditioning is a machining service, not a part.
